It is with sadness that we share the passing of John Quayle on 5 May 2026.
John was well known to many across MIMICO and the wider quarrying and forestry industries, having spent many years in the equipment sector with Komatsu, Titan (Volvo) and most recently MIMICO.
Over the years, John built strong relationships throughout the industry and became widely respected for both his professionalism and his ability to connect with people. Many customers, suppliers and colleagues knew John not only as a highly experienced salesman, but also as someone who was approachable, genuine and always ready with a story or a laugh.
John initially joined MIMICO as our Auckland Sales Representative before later returning in a part-time role supporting the yard and deliveries following his retirement. Like many who knew him, John enjoyed the people side of the industry and valued staying connected with customers and workmates.
Outside of MIMICO, John made a significant contribution to the Institute of Quarrying New Zealand over more than 35 years as a member. He served on the IOQ Auckland branch committee for nearly 15 years, including three years as Chairman, and also chaired the QuarryNZ Conference in Auckland in 2017.
John remained heavily involved in supporting the industry community and was recognised for his contribution through several awards over the years, including the Viking Conveyor/Paykel Engineering Shield for Outstanding Contribution to the Auckland IOQ Branch in 2017, and the IOQNZ Shield in 2022 recognising his wider contribution to the organisation nationally.
Many who attended Auckland branch meetings will also remember John’s sense of humour. One of his well-known traditions involved turning the annual Viking Conveyor loyalty prize draw into a light-hearted game of chance, something that became a memorable part of branch events for many years.
Outside of work and industry commitments, John enjoyed spending time with his wife Therese at Ruakaka and was a proud supporter, past president and life member of his local rugby club.
John made many lifelong friends throughout his career and will be remembered for his humour, friendly nature and the positive impact he had on those around him.
We extend our sincere condolences to Therese, Adam, Katie and the wider Quayle family.
John will be missed.
