Overview
MIMICO delivered a complete surge tunnel upgrade project for Stevenson Aggregates at Poplar Lane Quarry in Papamoa. The new system was designed to improve material transfer efficiency and support reliable aggregate handling throughout the quarry operation.
The surge tunnels receive aggregate product directly from a stacking conveyor before vibrating feeder units transfer material onto the tunnel discharge conveyor for processing.
Project Scope
The project included approximately 50 metres of fabricated surge tunnel sections and manufactured by MIMICO’s Auckland Engineering team.
The modular system included multiple tunnel and feeder sections to suit the site layout and material handling requirements while allowing efficient transport and installation.
Installation Works
The project involved the removal of the existing surge tunnels and conveyor infrastructure before installation of the new system.
Key works completed included:
• Removal of existing surge tunnels and conveyor system
• Installation of new fabricated surge tunnel sections
• Manufacture and installation of a new conveyor gravity take-up tower
• Reinstallation of the existing tunnel discharge conveyor onto the new gravity tower
Installation was completed by MIMICO’s Material Processing Service and Engineering teams.
Outcome
The completed upgrade provides Stevenson Aggregates with a modernised material handling system designed to improve operational reliability, maintain consistent material flow and support ongoing quarry production demands.
The modular tunnel design also improved installation efficiency and integration with the existing plant infrastructure.
